I’m one of the contributors here at the Spark Rental blog. You’ll get to know me pretty well, along with Brian (a landlord and real estate investor), Ben (the head of a small property management company in Denver) and Sofia, a renter and personal finance expert (you read that correctly). They’ll introduce themselves in due time, but for now you’re stuck with me.
And if you’re anything like me, you don’t want to work forever. Don’t get me wrong, I love working with real estate (who wouldn’t?), but it will be a nice day when work becomes strictly voluntary. Just imagine your inner dialogue each morning: “Hmm… should I work today, or should I take Betsy up on her invitation to play golf?” Or even: “You know, it’d be fun to take the kids to Italy for six weeks this summer.”
That’s where this blog comes in. Whether you’re more like Jennifer and just have one or two rental properties on the side while working full-time somewhere else, or a professional property manager like Ben, or a full- or part-time real estate investor, we’ve got your back. Our job is to help you earn the best possible ROI on your rental properties, and provide education and tips to automate rental management as much as possible.
To paraphrase: we’re all about helping you save time and earn more money.
We’ll walk you through tenant screening hacks and tips, from quick summaries to granular details about red flags to look for in rental applications and credit reports. We’ll explain state laws, and update you as they change. We’ll share rental resources and good advice. We’ll walk through automating rent collection so you never hear “Check’s in the mail!” again. We’ll share news, tips, even the occasional outrageous story related to your life as a property manager, landlord or real estate investor.
If you’re a renter, we’ve got you covered too. We’ll give you tips on finding the perfect property to rent, saving money, negotiating with landlords. And we know that you may not want to be a tenant forever, so we’ll help walk you through the home-buying process (it’s sometimes hairy but not too scary).
Money and time, time and money. The two things everyone wants more of. We’re not promising to make you rich in six months (“after just three installments of $19.99!”) or any nonsense like that, but if you’d like to spend less time hassling with investment properties, but earn a better return on them, we’re your people.
We’ll try not to stray too far from politically correct (no promises), but we will promise to always provide insights, advice and the occasional grin, and to always get back to you if you send us questions on social media or this site. (But not legal questions. We can’t answer those, it’s illegal. Is that legal advice? See that’s why we don’t answer legal questions.)
